MediaTek Dimensity 8550 Super Chipset Review — Specifications and Benchmarks
out of 10
MediaTek Dimensity 8550 (also known by the "Super" naming variant) is a targeted refresh of the Dimensity 8500, keeping the same core CPU and GPU while primarily upgrading on-device AI capabilities.
CPU
The chip uses an "All Big Core" design with eight matching Cortex-A725 cores in a 1+3+4 layout: one prime core at 3.4GHz, three cores at 3.2GHz, and four cores at 2.2GHz, with no small A5xx-series cores at all. The chip is built on a 4nm process.
GPU and AI
The chip includes an Arm Mali-G720 MC8 unit clocked around 1500MHz with HyperEngine technology for up to 120fps gaming. The standout upgrade, however, is the new NPU 880 unit equipped with LLM Booster technology and Google Gemini Nano V3 support, making this chip primarily a targeted AI update rather than a genuine performance leap. Most specialized reviews agree it's "an AI update, not a performance upgrade."
Memory and Connectivity
The chip supports LPDDR5X memory up to 9600Mbps (12% faster than the 8500), UFS 4.0 storage, a 5G-Advanced modem supporting download speeds up to 5.17Gbps, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.4.
Performance Results
The chip scored between 2 and 2.4 million points on AnTuTu depending on the device, and between 1,761-2,027 single-core and 7,148-7,208 multi-core on Geekbench.
✅ Pros
- +New NPU 880 unit with Gemini Nano V3 support.
- +All-Big-Core design delivers strong sustained performance.
- +Faster LPDDR5X memory and UFS 4.0 storage.
- +5G-Advanced modem with high download speeds.
❌ Cons
- −Not a genuine raw performance upgrade over the previous Dimensity 8500.
- −May confuse consumers due to near-identical core specifications.
