Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 (SM8850-AC) on 25 September 2025 at the Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii — the successor to the original Snapdragon 8 Elite, and by Qualcomm's own account "the world's fastest phone processor".
Note a common naming confusion: Qualcomm later released another chip named "Snapdragon 8 Gen 5" as a cheaper near-flagship alternative — a different, weaker chip than the "8 Elite Gen 5" despite the very similar name. Take care when comparing or buying.
Phones carrying it began appearing in late September 2025, starting with the Xiaomi 17 and later reaching the OnePlus 15, Honor Magic V6, Oppo Find X9 Ultra and Vivo X300 Ultra, with the Samsung Galaxy S26 series expected in early 2026.
CPU: the third generation of Oryon raises the ceiling again
The chip uses the third generation of Qualcomm's custom Oryon cores in a 2+6 layout: two Prime cores at up to 4.6–4.61 GHz and six Performance cores at up to 3.62–3.63 GHz — all "big" cores with no traditional efficiency cores, continuing the previous generation's philosophy.
Qualcomm claims 20% better performance and 35% better power efficiency than the original Snapdragon 8 Elite.
Technically, the chip carries a two-level cache: 12MB of L2 split across two clusters (one per core type), and an 8MB system-level cache (SLC) in place of traditional L3.
The actual results are striking: around 4 million points in AnTuTu (with some independent tests above 3.7 million), single-core performance matching the Apple A19 Pro, and a lead of up to 21% in multi-core tests according to Notebookcheck — a rare achievement for an Android chip against Apple's historic dominance.
GPU: a real move toward desktop-class technology
The chip uses the new Adreno 840, with an 18MB dedicated graphics cache (High Performance Memory — HPM) that raises bandwidth by 38% according to Qualcomm.
The company claims 23% better performance, 20% better efficiency and 25% better ray-tracing performance than the previous generation.
Most importantly, the unit officially supports modern standards: full Unreal Engine 5, DirectX 11/12, Vulkan 1.4 and mesh shading for GPU-driven rendering.
Even so, independent comparative tests (Gizmochina) showed that while this chip tops the 3DMark Wild Life Extreme peak score, it recorded the lowest floor score (3,219 points) versus the previous generation's 4,155 — pointing to greater variance in thermal stability during very long sessions, depending on each phone's cooling.
AI: a big leap toward agentic intelligence
The chip carries a Hexagon NPU 37% faster than the previous generation, with compute estimated by some at around 100 TOPS — a big jump from the previous generation's 40–45 TOPS (a figure not fully confirmed by Qualcomm, worth relaying cautiously).
It introduces "agentic AI" through the upgraded Qualcomm Sensing Hub, including features such as Personal Scribe and the Personal Knowledge Graph, which learn from the user's habits locally on the device without sending data to the cloud.
Memory, storage and connectivity: undisputed flagship specifications
The chip supports LPDDR5X memory at up to 5300 MHz with 84.8 GB/s of bandwidth, and UFS 4.1 storage.
On connectivity, it carries the Snapdragon X85 modem with staggering theoretical speeds of up to 12.5 Gbps down and 3.7 Gbps up, plus Wi-Fi 7 with power savings of up to 40%, and the new "Channel Sounding with Proximity AI" for more accurate short-range positioning.
Camera: the first phone chip with the professional APV codec
This chip is a genuine step change for photography: the first phone chip in the world to support the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec at bitrates approaching cinema-camera quality, alongside three 20-bit ISPs capturing four times the dynamic range.
It supports camera sensors up to 320 MP, 4K video at 120 fps, 1080p slow motion at 480 fps, and 8K HDR video playback at up to 60 fps.
Verdict
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 genuinely represents the peak of what Qualcomm has achieved so far — third-generation Oryon cores competing directly with Apple in raw performance, a GPU upgraded with desktop-class technology, and a world-class connectivity and imaging stack (the first APV support in a phone).
The one noticeable flaw is the variance in thermal stability during very long sessions, depending on each phone's cooling — and take real care not to confuse it with the weaker "Snapdragon 8 Gen 5" despite the similar name.
