Huawei Kirin 8000 Chipset Review — Specifications and Benchmarks

6.5 Our score

Published
Fabrication: 7 nm (SMIC N+2)
Cores: 1× Cortex-A77 at 2.4GHz + 3× Cortex-A77 at 2.19GHz + 4× Cortex-A55 at 1.84GHz
GPU: Mali-G610 MC3 at 864 MHz
AnTuTu: ~666,377
Modem: Balong (integrated)

After years of the technical blockade imposed on Huawei by US sanctions, the Chinese company keeps proving its resilience with self-designed chips through its HiSilicon arm.

The Kirin 8000 is the latest addition to that path — first appearing as a leak in December 2023 before its official announcement in October 2024 with the launch of the Huawei nova 12 series.

It carries no "absolute flagship" title, but it represents a smart balance of performance and price in Huawei's strategy to reclaim the mid-range, after the Kirin 9000S chips became exclusive to the top tier.

Performance: measured efficiency more than raw power

The Kirin 8000 uses a tri-cluster, eight-core design: a single Cortex-A77 core at 2.4 GHz for heavy tasks, three Cortex-A77 cores at 2.19 GHz for medium workloads, and four power-saving Cortex-A55 cores at 1.84 GHz.

That smart distribution gives the chip noticeable smoothness in everyday use, especially with Huawei's software optimisations through Ark Engine and HarmonyOS, which the company claims raise operating smoothness by up to 64% over previous generations.

But the technical truth stands: the Cortex-A77 architecture is no longer current, and the Mali-G610 GPU at just 864 MHz places the chip mid-table rather than competitive against rivals such as the Dimensity 7050 or Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 — even if AnTuTu results (exceeding 660,000 points on some devices) show a slight edge over the Dimensity 7100.

The real constraint: 7nm manufacturing

The biggest obstacle for the Kirin 8000 remains its dependence on SMIC's 7nm process, after Huawei lost access to TSMC's advanced fabs and EUV equipment in 2020.

That means higher power draw and more heat than rivals built on 4nm or 6nm — which shows in practice during demanding games or extended heavy use.

A hidden strength: battery and connectivity

Despite the constraints, Huawei has closed the gap through system-level power efficiency: phones carrying this chip (such as the Enjoy 90 Plus and Enjoy 90m Plus) ship with huge batteries up to 6620 mAh and 40W fast charging, plus reasonably modern connectivity — Wi-Fi 6/7, Bluetooth 5.2/6.0 and 5G through the integrated Balong modem.

The unknown: AI

Unlike its rivals, Huawei has not disclosed clear details about the NPU inside the Kirin 8000 or its compute capability in TOPS — a notable gap in an era where on-device AI has become a core selling point for every competitor.

Verdict

The Kirin 8000 is not a chip chasing the flagships — it is a practical, clever solution for Huawei's mid-range phones, balancing everyday performance and battery life well, while remaining bound by the limits of domestic manufacturing and the lack of transparency around its AI details. It is a chip that is "more than enough" for anyone after a practical Huawei phone — not a choice for maximum-performance enthusiasts or heavy gamers.

Score: 6.5 / 10

✅ Pros

  • +Large battery with good endurance
  • +Smooth day-to-day performance thanks to HarmonyOS and Ark Engine optimisations
  • +Modern 5G and Wi-Fi (6 or 7 depending on the model)
  • +Competitively priced for its class

❌ Cons

  • Still stuck on a 7nm process because of US sanctions
  • Relatively dated core architecture (Cortex-A77/A55) next to rivals such as the Dimensity 7000 series or newer Snapdragon 7 chips
  • Not enough official transparency on the NPU and its AI capabilities
  • Relatively limited GPU performance for demanding games

Frequently asked questions

Who makes the Kirin 8000?
It is designed by HiSilicon, a wholly owned Huawei subsidiary, and actually fabricated by China's SMIC on a 7nm process.
Does the Kirin 8000 support 5G?
Yes — through the Balong modem integrated into the chip, supporting 5G alongside 4G.
What is the difference between the Kirin 8000 and the Kirin 8000A?
The 8000A has only six cores (3× Cortex-A77 and 3× Cortex-A55), while the standard 8000 has a full eight — making it stronger in multi-threaded workloads.
Is the Kirin 8000 good for gaming?
It handles light and mid-weight games acceptably, but it is not the right pick for demanding titles or long sessions, especially given the frequency-limited Mali-G610 GPU (864 MHz).
Which phones use the Kirin 8000?
The Huawei nova 12, nova Flip S, Enjoy 70X, Enjoy 90 Pro Max and Enjoy 90 Plus, plus the nova 13, nova 14 and the 2024 MatePad 11.5 tablet.

Quick verdict

The Kirin 8000 is a chip suited to everyday use — browsing, social media, camera — inside Huawei's mid-priced phones. It does not target gamers or anyone after flagship-level performance, largely because of the ongoing manufacturing restrictions on Huawei.
